About Us

Experienced, Quality Breeders

Windwhirl Border Collies is a dedicated, ethical breeder focused on producing quality Border Collies for carefully selected active homes across Australia.

With over two decades of experience, we breed puppies from carefully selected bloodlines known for intelligence, sound temperament, and true working ability. Our Border Collies are bred to excel in demanding roles including working sheepdogs, search and rescue, agility, obedience, and performance sports. In select cases, we also place puppies with committed family homes that can provide the mental stimulation and active lifestyle this remarkable breed requires.

Since 2005, Wind-whirl has been committed to responsible breeding and advanced DNA health testing. We prioritise genetic diversity and maintain low coefficients of inbreeding (COI) to reduce inherited health risks while preserving the Border Collie’s natural athleticism, drive, and trainability.

Our puppies are raised using well-established developmental programs, including puppy Culture to support early confidence and socialisation. All puppies are born and raised in our home never in kennels  and are exposed to everyday sights, sounds, and structured early experiences. This careful foundation helps produce confident, resilient puppies who transition smoothly into their new working or sporting roles.

At Windwhirl Border Collies, we believe breeding is a lifelong responsibility. We provide ongoing support to our puppy owners and are deeply committed to placing each puppy in the right home, setting them up for a healthy, fulfilled future.

Our Breeding Philosophy

At Windwhirl Border Collies, we select our breeding dogs using a wide range of criteria, with temperament and health as our highest priorities. Without these foundations, even the most naturally gifted Border Collie cannot reach its full potential whether as a working dog, performance partner, or family companion.

Beyond health and temperament, we carefully evaluate each dog’s natural working ability, with particular emphasis on innate herding instinct. These instincts are observed and assessed before any human influence, ensuring that each dog possesses genuine, instinctive ability rather than trained responses alone.

Many Border Collies fail to reach their potential in work, sport, or everyday life due to factors such as inadequate early socialisation, inconsistent handling, lack of training experience, or inherited temperament irregularities. To minimise these risks, every prospective breeding dog at Wind-whirl is thoroughly assessed for trainability and stability. This includes basic and advanced obedience, ongoing herding work, and the ability to function calmly and reliably in everyday environments.

We recognise that no dog is perfect. When evaluating breeding candidates, our guiding questions are practical and honest:

Is the dog biddable and easy to live with?

Is it friendly with strangers, adaptable to new situations, and capable of remaining calm under pressure?

By prioritising these qualities, we aim to produce Border Collies that are not only capable and driven, but also balanced, adaptable, and a pleasure to live with dogs that can excel as working partners while also thriving as trusted family companions.
