About Us

Experienced, Quality Breeders

With decades of experience, Windwhirl Border Collies is dedicated to breeding exceptional Border Collies from carefully selected bloodlines. Our puppies are bred to excel in a wide variety of roles—from traditional working sheepdogs and search-and-rescue partners to performance sports competitors in agility, obedience, and working trials. In exceptional cases, we also place puppies into active family homes where they will be loved, challenged, and given the fulfilling lives they deserve.

Since 2005, we have been at the forefront of responsible breeding and DNA health testing, ensuring that every Windwhirl puppy is given the best possible start in life. By combining a deep knowledge of bloodlines with a commitment to genetic diversity and low COI (co-efficient of inbreeding), we strive to reduce health risks and preserve the Border Collie’s incredible working ability, intelligence, and temperament.

At Windwhirl, we also embrace modern, science-based rearing techniques such as Avidog and Puppy Culture. Our puppies are born and raised in our home—not in kennels—so they grow up surrounded by everyday sights, sounds, and experiences. This careful approach to early socialization ensures that each puppy is healthy, confident, and ready to thrive in whatever path their new family chooses for them.

Our Breeding Philosophy

At Windwhirl Border Collies, we select our breeding stock based on countless criteria, with temperament and health as our top priorities. Without these foundations, even the most naturally gifted Border Collie cannot reach its full potential, whether as a working dog or a family companion.

Next, we evaluate a wide range of traits, with natural herding instinct being paramount. We observe these instincts carefully before any human interference, ensuring that the dog’s innate ability to herd is strong and reliable.

Many dogs fail to reach their potential—whether for work, performance, or companionship—due to factors such as human error, lack of training experience, inadequate socialization, or temperament irregularities inherited from parents or ancestors. To address this, every prospective breeding dog at Windwhirl is tested for trainability, including basic and advanced obedience, ongoing herding exercises, and everyday living tasks.

Ultimately, every dog has imperfections. Our key question when evaluating breeding candidates is: Is the dog easy and biddable to live with? Is it friendly with strangers, adaptable to new situations, and able to remain calm under a variety of conditions? These traits ensure that every Windwhirl Border Collie can thrive both as a working partner and as a loving family companion.
